Creating is Good For Mental Health

There are so many creative people in the world and oh how lucky am I to be connected to such creative and fabulous people on twitter.

“Where The World Finds Gratitude in the Rhythm of Shared Writing” Kevin Hodgson

Thank you for the inspiration #DS106. Creating is so good for our mental health. I am always inspired by @grammasheri . i love that she nudges me to join in on her creative endeavours. I am also grateful to @wendtale who has also given me a nudge or two along the way. I have had the pleasure of collaborating with her on Humanizing Online Teaching and Learning before so connecting again has been great. So today I was inspired to create a remix of 106 lines of thought.

Here is my remix:

Collaborating on the 106 Lines of Thought poem with such fabulous people was so much fun. Here is the original.

  1. A bird, flying though the sky

Cuts through dark clouds

Circling on wind drifts

Your mind shifts to stars

Whose silver wings shimmer and shiver. And fade.

Cutting into thin air, exhilarating, hard to breath,

as you swim through the sun flooded blue

ignoring the green duckweed trying to get into your nostrils.

focusing on turquoise skies: the other side

until, until, there. You break through and for a moment,

you forget. (Go to line 106 option)

The dark clouds that touched your wings yesterday. Now replaced by light.

Invisibly lifted, you soar higher.

Higher and higher until you fear Icarus’ fate.

Looking down, you notice gratitude growing within you,

warming your bones just like the Sun’s rays.

wrapping wings of hope around the earth

observing the moment pass.

You glide, introspective,

Into a brighter light,

illuminating from deep within,

sparking something deep inside of you,

that reaches out to others

even animal friends, companions

share your brilliance

alive, living in the moment.

noticing the small things

celebrating the small things, because these give us all hope.

a child’s smile, a cat’s paw, a snowdrop peeking through the snow

a carousel of animated memories that light up receptors of gratitude

and trigger fond memories

captured, like snapshots, to browse through

a force keeping the dark clouds at bay

and allowing our inner strength to shine through

Wings rhythm beat is one of an ancient song

The sound of wings https://youtu.be/AzEZUofreU0

beats like hearts thumping in rhythm

like tribes gathering

on the plateau in late spring

reflecting on the past yet looking to the future

and still remaining warriors in the present

armed with love and compassion

To see ourselves as others see us!

It wad frae monie a blunder free us,

 An’ foolish notion.

Of snowflakes drifting on the winds

Snowflakes?

the only flakes I see are dust

different zones, different moans

Crisscrossing echoes linger

from far away. While closer, chattering birds

with young in tow, peaceful sounds, rise in stark contrast

with sirens, ever circling. Human and nature collide

something of our song still songs, inside

wonder rises, can we still hear?

have we salvaged our hope to listen for joy?

Hope springs eternal, so we are told. Joy

cometh from the sounds of birds, the breath of wind, the tangible sense of nature

of hope

Where poems are seeds and stories are leaves

the Earth grows stronger, and the sunlight

shadows these trees, firm-rooted in ancient soil

and we, the people, we are always digging deep

thinking and feeling , listening as though we may be

on the ancient bows of trees rooting stories through and through,

reaching at once deep into the earth and high into the sky

these

      clouds

               speak

                      of

                          forever

                      these

                 roots

       burrow

down

past the places where we share words

that tumble past my lips, like a blessing

or a curse

far beneath, where stone melts and churns

then returns with smoke and fire

through cracks and crevices

new land cools and forms

greens, flourishes,

only to have the Poet surface, to ponder:

And what will we make of this place

where poems and voice and culture collide?

what digital fossils left embedded in stone?

Take this hammer, take this chisel

Take some time to work alone

Shatter the surface of intentions

Surface this collaborative poem

Grab it by the scruff

Wield the woven words

a weapon against hate

a tapestry of many colors

a harmony of many notes

will you knit our thoughts together?

will you help us fly?

I can fly beside you, soar with you

Share in the life of these words

Sit still in silence with you

What will it be?

When we come to these last lines

Who will we be? Will we

Remember to breathe and

To flap. The End.

Take Time

I need to take time to smell the flowers as life is on fast forward for me at this time. Taking time to pause helps me focus on today and what I can do. I don’t need any reminders, but life really can change direction at any moment. We never know what is around the corner. So just for today , I will focus on taking each step I need to. Making sure to take time to stop, reflect and move forward.

Taking Time

All photos by @sspellmancann

How often do we take time to notice all the beauty that surrounds us? I take the same walk many times throughout my week, but each day I see something new. Change isn’t always easy, but if we look at change as seeing things from a different perspective, then maybe we will embrace it even more. Although the thought of change can be scary, it can also be exhilarating. So just for today I will take time to embrace change.

Look for the Little Things

@sspellmancann

Most days on my walk I travel the same path. Even though I am going the same way I always look for something different and if I keep my eyes wide open I find them. This was out on my deck today and it almost doesn’t look real. It’s so cute, a little caterpillar that turns into a beautiful eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly.

It doesn’t take much these days to entertain me. It’s a slow pace of life where I am and I know I’ll be back to the city soon enough. For today I will take pleasure in the small things you might want to look for them too.

Resources Resources Resources

There are these and so much more. Check them out.

If you are an educator or a School Counsellor I know you love resources so I collated a few for you to use as you start the school year. Save these on your desktop as you will want to go back to them often.

School Counsellor resources were created because of a fabulous Math resource I saw on Twitter created by @beatris_mata which you can find here.

Other resources:

Phys.Ed resources here.

When we share we are better. If you remix mine and make it better which I know you will please share back with me @sspellmancann. Who doesn’t like resources?
